Abstract:

Interviews conducted 1960 by Amelia R. Fry for the Regional Cultural History Project, University of California Library, Berkeley. Part of a series on University history. Photographs inserted. Comments on his grandfather, James Sinclair of Hudson's Bay Company fame and his father, Hugh Foster, an 1850 California settler; pre-earthquake San Francisco; college days at Berkeley, 1902-1906; engineering faculty; work as engineer with various water supply companies; association with University in Engineer's Office; Ralph P. Merritt and Robert G. Sproul; surveying work and real estate transactions for new campuses. Appendix A: The History of the Big "C" at Berkeley, with related clippings (20 leaves); Appendix B: The Story of the Development of the Athletic Facilities at Berkeley (96 leaves), with a blueprint of Edwards Track Field, designed by Hugh Foster.
